It seems like each time we have a birthday party I tell myself to keep it simple this time, and I think I accomplished just that with Owen’s first birthday party. Being 13 weeks pregnant and doing most of the planning/preparation during the first trimester wasn’t easy. It was hard to find the motivation to take my plans and put them to action, but I did it! I wanted to share with you my simple, DIY projects that made Owen’s birthday special.
First of, I went to the Target party clearance and I found a black and white banner, along with some black and white stickers, straws, and bucket. I paid about $6-$8 for all of that so I decided to make the color scheme black and white.
I bought bulletin board letters from the Dollar Tree and traced them onto white card stock for the banner. The background is a black tablecloth with some white streamers.
My mother-in-law make his cute smash cake and I added the ONE pennant flags tied to skewers.
For the cupcakes, I used this free printable from The Sweetest Occasion to make the cupcake toppers along with some black card stock. I simply just taped the card stock to a toothpick and put them in the cupcakes. So easy!
As favors, we offered a Make Your Own Trail Mix and it was a hit. The kids filled their bags with peanuts, raisins, and M&M’s. I used burlap sacks with a candle holder placed inside to hold the treats.
For Owen’s first year board, I used a black foam poster and metallic markers. I just searched different hand lettering on Pinterest and decorated the board with pencil and then went over it with the metallic markers.
I also made a number one out of various pictures from the past year. This is something I have done with each of my children and I think it’s a fun/special way to highlight that first year of life.
If you follow me on Facebook then I’m sure you have seen some of Owen’s monthly pictures. I made a banner from those as well and it’s so crazy to see him grow month by month.
For Owen’s high chair, I used the stickers from the Target dollar section and a metallic marker to write ONE. I also made a ribbon banner from black ribbon and black chevron ribbon.
Owen was a little overwhelmed but he had a good time! Happy first birthday baby boy!!
